Triaxial Cell

Total stresses when measured in a triaxial cell are more complex in their nature. Numerous parameters may be me measured including back, pressure, pore water pressure and volume change. From these values various engineering properties can be calculated.

Triaxial cell is used to apply total stress. The sample is subjected to and all-round confining pressure. Load is then applied through piston of triaxial cell on a pressure pad on the top of the specimen. In a triaxial cell, sample is confined in a rubber membrane. Brand Triaxial Cell are manufactured from carefully selected material. The cells are manufactured to accommodate different sizes of specimen Universal Triaxial Cell accommodates samples of diameters 38 mm to 100 mm.

Universal Triaxial Cell (Stationary Bushing)

Suitable for testing 38mm, 50mm, 75mm and 100mm. diameter specimens. The equipment comprises the following:

Perspex cell with anvil and loading plunger. The cell can be easily opened by releasing the nuts and is leak proof upto 10kg/cm.sq. fluid pressure. An oil plug which can also be used as an air vent is provided for introducing a thin layer of oil over water. This provided effective sealing at he plunger for long duration tests. The cell is fitted with four sleeve packed valves of no volume change type on the base.

Pore Pressure Apparatus (10KG/CM )

This apparatus is used for measuring pore water pressure and pore air pressure in soils. This is as per the principal outlined in the book "Measurement of soil properties in triaxial tests" by A.W. Bishop and D.J. Henkel. This is used as an accessory for triaxial test apparatus.

Specifications: The apparatus consists of a panel for wall mounting on which are fitted -1.0 to 10

Manometer: Glass U-tube manmeter for measuring low positive pore pressures negative pore pressures and checking zero error of pressure gauge. It is provided with a mercury trap (Mercury supplied at extra cost. Null indicator made out of clear transparent Perspex with mercury trap and cursor to indicate the mercury level.)

BURETTE: 50ml Burette for measuring the volume change in the soil specimen. Pressure pump fitted with four sleeve packed valves, Operated by means of a hand wheel on the end of the piston rod which is threaded through the pump cap and gives a smooth, fine adjustment of pressure. Copper coil and water reservoir. The unit is tested against leaks upto 10kg/cm sq.

Soil Trimmer (Hand Operated)

For trimming various diameter specimen for triaxial and unconfined compression tests.

Specifications: The lower specimen grip is mounted on a disc which rotates freely. The soil sample is mounted on the lower specimen grip and the upper grip is firmly seated on top of the specimen. The vertical guide can be adjusted to control the depth of cut. While trimming the lower disc is rotated by hand. Supplied complete with a wire saw, trimming knife, pairs of gripper plates for 38mm dia, 50mm dia, 75mm dia & 100mm dia specimen.

Dead Weight Type Oil Water Constant Pressure System

This device is used to maintain cell pressure constant for a long duration and the system can be used in place of conventional constant pressure system using mercury pots where certain minimum heights are required. Problems like deairiation of pump, leakage of mercury etc. are eliminated in this system. This unit is smaller in volume and cab be used in mobile Laboratory also. This can maintain pressure in the cell upto 20kg/cm sq. Pressure is maintained constant in the system by a balancing calibrated weighs on a spindle against a column of oil, Operating under constant feed back.

Construction: The system consists of an oil pump continuously driven by an electric motor during the test period. The internal components are housed in a strong compact housing. The piston on which weights are kept rotates with minimum friction A transparent Oil water vessel is provided to transmit pressure to the cell. A hand pump provided facilitates priming and to maintain constant pressure during power failure. 2 2

Volume Change Gauge

When conducting triaxial tests on soil samples, it is observed that due to internal pressure, the cell expands, soil specimen consolidates resulting in the change of volume change Gauge is therefore devised to accurately measure volume changes. This is measured by observing the quantity of water entering or leaving the cell as the cell pressure and axial load are changed it is achieved by the displacement of free surface between the water supplied to the cell and another fluid (Paraffin of kerosene). A dye is added to the paraffin for clear demarcation of the interface. The unit consist of a glass graduated tube of the appropriate capacity graduated to parts of a ml. enclosed in a perpex tube sealed by two end caps. The unit is fitted with manifolds and valves which enable it to be sued with the triaxial cell and the constant pressure (Mercury controls) system. The cell pressure can either be directly applied to the cell from the constant pressure system or through the volume change gauge. The graduated glass tube is not subjected to any difference in pressure and its inside is coated with a layer of silicon water repellent to reduce the error in meniscus. There is an arrangement for filling the unit with water and paraffin and a drainage valve is provided in the lower end cap. The whole assembly is mounted on a panel suitable for wall mounting. The unit is supplied complete with a pressure hose with end couplings and a packet of dye.

Swell Testing Apparatus

Remoulded Compacted soil, when soaked in water, absorbs and swells. Swell Test Apparatus is designed to determine the swelling pressure developed by soil specimens molded to desired densities at known moisture contents.

California Bearing Ratio Test (Field Type)

As Per IS: 2720 (Part- XXXI) 1969

In recent years it has become important to know C.B.R. Values in situ. It is useful in determining the load carrying capacity in the field when in-place density and water contents are such that the degree of saturation in 80% or greater, when material is cohensionless and coarse grained, such that it is not effected by changes is water contents and when the material has been in-place for considerable time. The loading is effected by means of a mechanical load farms which can be fixed to the under side of a truck.

Specifications: Mechanical screw loading jack, 10,000kg. capacity with U-bracket and swivel head. Penetration piston, 50mm dia.threaded at eh upper end. Extension rods consisting of 2 lengths 5cm. 2 lengths 10cm., 1 length 30cm., 1 length 50cm., 1 length 10cm., used as spacers between the proving ring and penetration piston. Load Fame Capacity 5000kg (Hand Operated)

Specifications: The Unit is designed for a maximum load of 5000kg. and consists of a two speed screw jack mounted in a frame with identical top and base channel pieces so that the unit can be placed either way up and the device can be used for loading from above of from below whichever is convenient. This is a floor model.

Specifications: It consists of a cabinet which houses the electrical motor, reduction gear and the turret gear box. The loading is done by the upward movement of the lower platen of approx. 198mm dia. which is firmly fixed to the lead screw. When the lever is set in the neutral position, it isolates the lead screw from the rest of the drive mechanism and the lead screw can be manually moved up or down by operating the handle. The various rates of strain that can be obtained are as follows.

On the unit are fixed mains switch , a jewel lamp and a forward reverse switch. A relay is fitted inside the cabinet so that in case of a power failure the unit will not restart on its own on resumption of power, unless the switches are operated.

The adjustable cross head can be set at any required height over the two pillars and secured in position by tightening the nuts. It carries a hexagonal proving ring adaptor. A bracket for strain dial gauge (dial) gauge to be ordered extra) is attached to one of the pillars of the load frame. The base with the two pillars and adjustable cross head is detachable and the whole upper portion above the level of the top plate of the cabinet can be fixed in its proper positon with the help of the clamping screws.

Point Load Index Tester

As Per IS: 8764, 1978.

Used for testing rock, aggregate and core samples as well as out crop specimen in their original shape. Very useful for rock classification. This is a portable instrument and is useful in the field also. Uniaxial compressive strength for rock specimen can be predicted approximately.

Specifications: The instrument comprises of:- A three pillar type load frame on the base of which at the centre is fixed a 10 tone capacity hydraulic jack. With a conical platen at the top of jack. The other conical platen is fixed to the top plate of the frame at its centre. The distance between two conical platens is adjustable by vertical movement of the upper plate of the load frame. Loading jack with integral hand operated pump and a pressure gauge 0-2500kg. x 25kg.

Optional: Pressure gauge 0-10000kg. x 50kg.

Brazilian Test Apparatus

The instrument is useful for testing specimen from 50mm dia. to 100mm dia. and of thickness of half the diameter.

The specimen is held in circular jaws, this is primarily similar to a compression Machine and consists of a small load frame having sturdy base with two vertical threaded rods and an adjustable cross head. The hydraulic jack is fitted at the center of the base of the load frame. The jack of the load frame is self retracting and two plain platens are supplied.

A pressure gauge capacity 0-200KN x 2KN is fixed at the base of jack. A maximum pointer is also provided on the gauge a pair of semi-circular platens for 50mm dia, samples also

provided. This instrument can be used in field also.

Split Spoon Sampler

As Per IS: 2131-1963 & 9640-1980.

This is used for Standard Penetration Test. For determining penetration resistance (N Value) of soil which can be related to unconfined Compressive strength, Penetration resistance (N Value) of soil is determined by giving a number of blows with a 65kg weight falling through a given distance of 75cm required to penetrate the assembly to a depth of 30cm, when properly seated on the ground.

Specifications: The sampler is made from a steel tube split lengthwise and held together by a head fitted with a ball check valve and a hardened steel shoe of inside cutting edge of 35mm dia. The sampler is 35mm I.D. and 50.8mm in outer diameter and 508mm/long. One adaptor to connect 'A' type drill rods is also supplied.

Split Spoon Sampler With Liner

Specifications: Same as above but the diameter is increased to accommodate a brass liner. Complete with brass liner.
